Festival offers winter fun — So. Cal-style

CARLSBAD — It’s winter, Southern California style.

On Friday and Saturday, the Move Your Feet Before You Eat Foundation is hosting its inaugural Carlsbad Village Winter Festival complete with an ice skating rink.

The foundation is hosting its event from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday and 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday at 2938 Roosevelt St.

The group aims to draw 800 people and is offering $100 gift certificates for any person who gets three people to register concurrently.

Activities include bounce houses, live music and, of course, ice skating. The rink, however, is not created with traditional ice, but instead a plastic polymer better suited for warm coastal temperatures.

Admission, which includes skate rental, is $10 for adults and $6 for kids 12 and under for 30 minutes.

Still, Kathy Kinane, executive director of Move Your Feet Before You Eat, said the rink will provide a fun, family atmosphere.

“The rink holds about 100 people an hour, but right now we are closing it at 75 so there will be plenty of room,” she said. “It’s very much like a regular ice rink.”

Other activities include an outdoor screening of the monster hit movie “Frozen,” snow making machines, an arts and crafts fair and a self-guided mural tour through the Village.

The “Frozen” theme continues with inflatable’s to draw kids.

“We want people to come and walk the Village and enjoy some family time,” Kinane said. “We want to get people to be active together. Ice skating is one of those activities where parents and kids can do it together.”

The concept for the event, Kinane said, began several years ago when she saw a similar festival in Poway. Kinane also piggybacked off the successful Oceanside Turkey Trot, which her company Kinane Events promotes, to spread the word.

This weekend’s event also got a big boost in the form of sponsorships and a grant. The city of Carlsbad authorized $5,000 to the winter festival and is a sponsor along with Datron World Communications, Pacific Marine Credit Union, HomeLife Village Realtors and the Carlsbad Village Merchants Association.

As for the event, it will be spread throughout the Village with the movie, music and snow making at the Carlsbad Village Faire, ice skating at the Roosevelt Street Parking Lot, bounce houses at the parking lot on Grand Avenue and State Street, fundraiser at the yoga co-op.

“We’ve had a couple logistically challenges, but now we are really exciting about the support we are getting from the community,” Kinane said.
