ESCONDIDO — The Escondido Police Department will be on high alert searching for people driving under the influence this week.
Officers will be on patrol from 4 p.m. Friday to at least 1 a.m. Saturday in and around the city, according to the department.
“Strong enforcement of DUI laws remains a key part of our overall traffic safety efforts,” Police Chief Ken Plunkett said in a statement. “Impaired driving crashes are entirely preventable. When someone chooses to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, they’re not just violating the law — they’re putting lives at risk.”
The department reminded the public that impairment can result not only from alcohol but also from prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and marijuana.
A first-time DUI conviction can result in up to $13,500 in fines as well as a suspended license, police said.
