ESCONDIDO — Police issued more than 70 citations for various infractions committed by drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians during a citywide safety operation in Escondido, police said today.
The enforcement sweep, which ran from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, focused on protecting vulnerable road users. Officers contacted 73 individuals during the operation, according to the Escondido Police Department.
Sixty-four drivers were cited for infractions that could put bicyclists and pedestrians at risk, including speeding, sign and signal violations and unsafe turns. In addition, police cited four bicyclists and four pedestrians. Enforcement also targeted unlicensed operation, resulting in citations for three individuals for driving without a license and one for driving on a suspended license, police said.
“Safety is a shared responsibility, with drivers holding the greatest responsibility to keep other road users safe,” Escondido Police Chief Ken Plunkett said in a statement. “We hope this operation serves as a reminder to everyone to practice due care and to look out for one another.”
Police department officials noted that additional bicycle and pedestrian safety enforcement operations are planned for the future.
The California Office of Traffic Safety funded the program through a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
