Commentary: An open letter to Phil Urbina

By Hope Nelson

Mr. Urbina, you need to get your facts straight!

You currently have a “boosted” ad, meaning you are paying for an ad on Facebook saying that Cori Schumacher, recently re-elected to Carlsbad City Council, has a campaign to defund our police.

From that ad:

“Join me in supporting our top-rated police department and push back against Councilmember Cori Schumacher and her Campaign Zero efforts to defund our police.”

Do you know that Ms. Schumacher was supported this past March by both the Carlsbad Police and Carlsbad Fire Departments in her successful re-election to City Council?

Do you know that in the last 3 budget cycles in Carlsbad, Ms. Schumacher was the only councilmember calling for more police, which Carlsbad finally budgeted in the FY 2019-2020 cycle?

Do you know that there was only one person voting against more fully funding our PD and that was the Mayor, who supports you, Mr. Urbina?

Do you know that in early June, the Carlsbad PD announced on its own that it will no longer practice carotid control holds, known as a chokehold, along with adopting the “Eight Can’t Wait” campaign practices?

From our own City of Carlsbad website:

“Police Support #8 Can’t Wait – The City of Carlsbad Police Department, already named the top rated police department in California for preventing excessive use of force, has put in place all eight policies recommended by the Campaign Zero’s Eight Can’t Wait campaign. The Campaign is part of a national movement to prevent excessive use of force by police.

According to Campaign Zero, these eight policies can decrease police violence by 72%.”

Do you know that your opponent in District 4 is not Cori Schumacher but Teresa Acosta, who is running a clean and honest campaign unlike yours which seems is misleading the public? It would be refreshing to see your campaign discuss the issues.

Mr. Urbina, the only question left is, “Where did you come up with this garbage?”

You are, at best, grossly misinformed and at worst…well, you figure it out.

This sets the poorest example for a City Council Candidate the City of Carlsbad has ever seen. I strongly suggest you bow out of the District 4 Council race.

Since I doubt you will do that, please make sure in the future, you have your facts straight. The residents of Carlsbad deserve honest candidates with integrity that tell truths.

Mr. Stipe:

I very much agree. We have this odd dynamic going on here where the Councilwoman says she is in favor of the police, but shames an officer in public. We have this odd dynamic where Cori claims to be ‘woke” but refuses to meet with those seeking a peaceful and constructive dialogue and loses it when the Mayor puts policing issues on the agenda for a Council workshop. It’s so not about beliefs here, it’s about politics all the time. It gets tiring.

Not to mention that a sitting council member posting the picture of a city officer along with the shamming is reckless, dangerous and irresponsible. Especially in the current situation we are in. There’s a reason most police don’t live in the city they patrol, it’s called safety. I don’t think you’re allowed to do that. Wither it’s our law enforcement or the city hall janitor it’s not right.

I guess Cori’s pick is running against him. Therefor here comes the dogpile from her army.

His Response:
An Open Letter to Councilmember Cori Schumacher (and team)

Ms. Wright,

I will address my comments to you since you so kindly addressed them to me via the social media site “nextdoor.com”. As a Carlsbad citizen, who participates in the social and political fabric of our community, you are valued.

You are also dead wrong. Before you blindly accept Councilmember Cori Schumacher’s political double speak in defense of her position on police, you should really take your own advice and do your research.

To have opinions based on feelings and not facts that you then go about planting in our community discourse is dangerous and irresponsible, just like Councilmember Cori Schumacher’s attack on our top-rated police department.

To understand the context, you must first be aware of the shift in national narrative toward police. The local Democratic party, of which Cori is an active member, chair’s a committee for and plays a leadership role in, voted at their June 2020 meeting to spearhead efforts to defund the police.
“The San Diego County Democratic Party endorsed a resolution that basically means to defund the police via what we propose is a “Responsible Reduction in the Police Department Funding.”” Will Kennedy Rodriguez, Chairman San Diego County Democratic Party. (Statement released June 17th).

While reasonable Democrats do not support the defunding of our police, Ms. Schumacher has made no public attempt to use her leadership role in this committee to distance herself from this travesty of a vote.

Instead, on July 8th, not even a full month post her support of her local party’s efforts to defund police, Councilmember Cori Schumacher then began circulating an official memorandum, demanding our city council call the Carlsbad PD to the carpet and make them answer to a list of demands made by a group whose stated end goal is the abolition of police through a three-step process. (See screenshot of Campaign Zero’s EightCan’tWait.org below for your reference)

My question to you is, if Councilmember Schumacher is so supportive of our Carlsbad Police Department, and acknowledges their exemplary service to our community, why is she asking the tax payer to foot the bill on an agenda item that is not relevant to Carlsbad, especially in these financially uncertain times?

Either, like a true modern politician, she is using our taxpayer funds (agenda items cost roughly $10,000 dollars per item) to try to convince us that there is a problem, so she can self-promote on solving it. Or, she genuinely aligns with these groups seeking to “fully defund the police” (reference the above screen shot for quote source)

Until she rescinds her demand to docket this extreme group’s ideology, I stand behind my petition calling on the residents of Carlsbad to push back against Councilmember Cori Schumacher’s support of organization’s that seek to defund our Police Department.

Bankrupt, defunct cities do not happen overnight. They happen over a series of years, with each bad vote, each irresponsible penny spent on self-promotion in the name of social justice for our politicians. Now is not the time to play politics with our safety.

City Council Candidate for District 4,
Phil Urbina

How do I see the other comments?

Urbina needs to find a different way to run for Carlsbad council. Why is he attacking a sitting member he is not running against? On top of this about defunding the police?

As Hope wrote she has been the most supportive of increasing funding for 3 years now.

Ms.

After this rant failed to get much traction, the unfortunate author has moved this already refuted rant to the Coast News opinion columns. Phil Urbina and many others have already refuted this drivel penned by Carlsbad’s leading apostle of division and hate. But I’ll toss in my input from the left.

Hope rattles on about CPD adopting the “8 can’t wait” policies”, but it was Cori and her social media surrogates who opposed the peaceful exercise of the First Amendment, indeed they lied about the organizers and claimed they were from the Ku Klux Klan. When Cori was running for Mayor she opposed Dr. Weber’s Assembly Bill in 2019 that was an incremental reform, that addressed the carotid hold. To say Cori is a proponent of racial justice begs the question of why she has refused to meet with the group that organized the protest and ignores the fact they have thanked the Mayor, the leaders of CPD, and the other Councilmembers for listening to their points. Cori has refused to meet with them.

To portray Cori as a friend of law enforcement is also a lie. for it’s Cori and her online surrogates like the author, currently engaged in COVID shaming an officer. Their comments are as shrill as this rambling polemic.
