CARLSBAD — A Carlsbad man was arrested early Tuesday after allegedly fleeing the scene of a crash that killed a 23-year-old San Diego woman on Las Palmas Drive, police said.
The incident occurred at around 12:37 a.m. in the 2200 block of Las Palmas Drive. According to the Carlsbad Police Department, a Volkswagen Jetta collided with three parked cars before striking the woman, who had just exited her vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses reported that the Volkswagen was traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed before the collision.
The driver, identified as 26-year-old Jose Manuel Zambrano Cruz, of Carlsbad, allegedly fled the scene but was later located in the 6600 block of El Camino Real. He was arrested on charges of felony hit-and-run, DUI causing injury or death and vehicular manslaughter and booked into the Vista Detention Facility.
The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The cause of the collision is under investigation, with alcohol suspected as a contributing factor.
