CARLSBAD — Although it wasn’t a picture perfect beach day, dozens of beachgoers braved the chill of overcast skies May 2 to be part of the second annual Beach Fest, hosted by the California State Parks.
Music from the V-Dubs provided the background for those who strolled along the sand visiting the several booths which lined Frazee Beach, known to locals as “State Beach,” just south of the Off Shore Surf Shop.
According to organizers, the event was held to raise awareness and support for coastal preservation and stewardship by educating the public about effects of marine debris and providing an opportunity for residents to participate in a beach cleanup.
Several students took part in one of the two beach cleanups, sponsored by the Surfrider Foundation and a partnership between the American Chemistry Council, Keep California Beautiful and the California State Parks.
The partnership has led to several new recycling bins added to the state beaches along the coast and a new educational program aimed at educating elementary and middle school children on the importance of recycling and preventing litter.
“California State Parks welcomes the opportunity to partner with other government entities, the private sector and Keep California Beautiful to promote the value of environmental education with San Diego’s youth, as well as teach them about the importance of recycling plastics and other materials,” Ruth Coleman, director with the California State Parks, said
