Webb explodes for 4 TDs as unbeaten Carlsbad tops San Marcos

Carlsbad senior running back Darian Webb rushed for 271 yards and four touchdowns on 28 carries in Friday night’s 42-26 home win over Avocado League rival San Marcos at Bob McAllister Field at Swede Krcmar Stadium.

For all that production, he kept his postgame assessment brief.

“I feel I played pretty good,” Webb told The Coast News. “The win is flushed. It’s on to the next.”

Quarterback Antonio D’Alessandro offered a more emphatic assessment.

“Darian Webb had an unreal night,” D’Alessandro said.

Webb’s fourth touchdown helped the Lancers secure the win, but it took an extra play to get there. His first attempt from the 10-yard line was nullified by a penalty. He found the end zone on the next play.

“That was to seal the deal,” Webb said.

Carlsbad improved to 8-0 and remained atop the county rankings, but San Marcos made the Lancers earn it. Carlsbad led 14-0 in the second quarter before the Knights scored 13 unanswered points to cut the deficit to 14-13 at halftime.

The Lancers responded with two third-quarter touchdowns, extending their lead to 28-13. San Marcos answered with a touchdown to make it 28-20 entering the fourth, keeping the pressure on Carlsbad.

Webb scored twice in the final quarter as Carlsbad held off the Knights, who added another touchdown to make it 35-26 before the Lancers’ final score.

Carlsbad finished with 313 rushing yards on 36 carries. D’Alessandro completed 14 of 18 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns, including a scoring strike to Elijah Fudge.

Tight end and defensive lineman Trent Kellas praised Webb’s impact beyond his production.

“Darian is so much fun, not just because he is a great player and rusher, but because he is a leader and he brings the energy to the team,” Kellas said.

Defensive lineman Mario Anguiano said the Lancers’ unbeaten start is not their ultimate goal.

“Being 8-0 is great but it’s not where we want to be as a team,” Anguiano said. “We want to be the Open Division champions and until then the job isn’t finished.”

Kellas said the team has stayed focused on the next opponent rather than feeling added pressure from its record.

“We haven’t changed anything or put more pressure on ourselves but instead continue to work hard for the game ahead,” he said.

Carlsbad visits La Costa Canyon on Friday, Oct. 23, for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
