VISTA — One of Vista’s oldest schools is now its newest — and nationally recognized.
Students, faculty and families returned Aug. 12 for the new school year to a Bobier Elementary School campus transformed from the one that closed after the 2023-24 school year.
Over the past two years, while the old campus was demolished and new buildings, fields and grounds were constructed, Bobier students attended classes at the former Beaumont Elementary School campus, about three miles south. Beaumont closed at the same time as Bobier because of declining enrollment in the district.
Both schools were built in the late 1950s, with the original Bobier campus opening in 1956, three years before Beaumont. Vista Academy of Visual and Performing Arts, originally Santa Fe Elementary School, opened in 1955.
Vista Magnet Middle School occupies the former Vista High School campus, where the main structure dates to 1936, though it has received upgrades over the years.
Vista Unified School District officials have touted the 10-acre Bobier site as the “campus of the future.” The rebuilt campus includes more than 84,000 square feet of classroom and office space, along with an additional 10,000 square feet of covered courtyard space, according to the district.
The campus features 32 air-conditioned classrooms, solar panels to help control energy costs and a synthetic field providing recreation space for the more than 500 students who attend Bobier. Its new library also serves as a science, technology, engineering, arts and math, or STEAM, lab, and the project added more parking.
Ruhnau Clarke Architects, which designed the campus, received an Outstanding Project Award from Learning By Design magazine. The project was recognized in the publication’s 2024 early childhood and elementary school category.
Vista Unified Superintendent Matt Doyle said in a statement that the Bobier rebuild will “set the bar for future improvements across the district.”
Funding for the project came from Measure LL, a $247 million bond measure approved by Vista Unified voters in November 2018.
