Swimmers brave chilly Pacific for inaugural Polar Plunge in Encinitas

ENCINITAS — Dozens of swimmers rang in the New Year with a cold-water plunge Thursday morning during the inaugural First Day Polar Plunge at South Cardiff State Beach.

Hosted by California State Parks, the free community event invited participants to take a dip in the Pacific on Jan. 1 near Lifeguard Tower 11, marking the start of the year with a bracing swim.

Afterward, participants warmed up by the fire pits, with hot drinks offered on shore. The event ran from 10 a.m. to noon.
