OCEANSIDE — For the San Diego Strike Force, the third time was not the charm.
The Arizona Rattlers defeated San Diego 43-37 Sunday in front of an announced crowd of 8,463 at Frontwave Arena in the Indoor Football League Western Conference Championship, completing a season-long hat trick against the Strike Force, avenging last year’s playoff loss and ending a season the San Diego organization has repeatedly called the best in franchise history.
“Who’s the best team on that day? Who’s going to execute the best, who’s going to take care of the ball, who’s going to be the more physical team? That’s where our mindset is. It’s a business trip. We’re ready to go. We had a great week of practice, and I liked where our mental state is and where our focus is,” said Rattlers head coach Kevin Guy.
The Rattlers are the IFL’s most decorated franchise, having won seven league championships since the team’s founding in 1992.
The Strike Force struck first, with Ernesto Lacayo connecting on a 32-yard field goal late in the first quarter to give San Diego a 3-0 lead. Arizona answered in the second when Max Meylor found Ron Brown Jr. for a 9-yard touchdown. San Diego reclaimed the lead when Kiael Kelly scored on a 1-yard run with 3:55 left in the half.
The lead lasted just 25 seconds.
Strike Force quarterback Nate Davis was intercepted by Yahsyn McKee, who returned the pick 50 yards for a touchdown. Arizona added a safety with seven seconds remaining in the half to take a 16-10 lead into the locker room.
San Diego regained the lead early in the third quarter when Davis connected with Shane Hooks for a 24-yard touchdown, putting the Strike Force ahead 17-16. Then the bottom fell out.
Meylor answered with touchdown passes to Trey Odoms-Dukes and Brown, covering 28 and 29 yards, respectively, as Arizona scored twice in less than five minutes. The Rattlers took a 30-17 lead into the fourth quarter, and San Diego never regained control.
Arizona converted 7 of 10 third downs on the night and held the ball for 37:13, nearly 15 minutes more than the Strike Force. Meylor finished 14 of 23 for 159 yards and three touchdowns through the air while adding two rushing scores.
The Rattlers stretched their lead to 37-17 on Meylor’s 4-yard touchdown run with 5:19 remaining before San Diego mounted a furious late rally.
Davis found Hooks for a 50-yard touchdown 41 seconds later, then connected with Dallas Daniels for a 19-yard score with 37 seconds remaining. Hooks caught his third touchdown of the night on a 2-yard pass with five seconds left, but San Diego failed to convert any of its three fourth-quarter two-point attempts.
“Nate Davis is a great player,” Guy said. “He’s very intelligent, can see the field, so you’ve got to give him different looks.”
Davis finished with 255 passing yards and four touchdowns, but the interception proved costly as San Diego was unable to overcome Arizona’s second-half surge.
“The biggest thing with playing Arizona is, it’s more about playing them than it is playing against the players,” Strike Force head coach Taylor Genuser said. “They stay very consistent with the way they call plays, the way they run their defense and the way they do their special teams, and they do a great job of recruiting to their system, so no matter who’s out there, they’re going to play disciplined football and do their jobs to a T.
“For us, we just have to play physical, we can’t allow their quarterback to extend plays when the play breaks down, and offensively, we can’t turn the ball over or miss kicks.”
The loss ended a season in which Genuser guided San Diego to a franchise-record 13-3 regular-season record and the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference. On Aug. 7, the IFL named Genuser its 2026 Coach of the Year.
The league’s recognition extended beyond Genuser. Defensive lineman Adam Anderson and center Jalen Booth were named to the All-IFL first team, while Davis, offensive lineman Ivory Scott and linebacker Royce See were selected to the second team.
For the third consecutive season, San Diego reached the Western Conference Championship game.
For the third consecutive season, its season ended there.
