Section of I-15 closed due to bomb investigation

ESCONDIDO — Sandiego6.com reports that a large section of Interstate 15 will be closed Nov. 19 for three hours so that authorities can investigate a backyard explosion that landed one man in the hospital and another in jail.
An explosion that took place around 1 p.m. Nov. 18 in an unincorporated area of Escondido behind George Djura Jakubec’s home led to his arrest.
A gardener working on his yard inadvertently triggered the blast and medics took the 49-year-old to Palomar Medical Center where he was treated for injuries the sheriff’s department believe to be nonlife-threatening.
Neighbors have reported hearing other blasts in the area.
Sheriff’s jail records indicate Jakubec was booked on suspicion of possession of an explosive device with intent to injury or intimidate, making a destructive device without a permit, possession of a destructive device and unlawful possession of an explosive. His bail was set at $100,000 and he was scheduled to make his first court appearance Nov. 22.
Interstate 15 was scheduled to be closed from El Norte to Centre City parkways from 9 a.m. to noon due to the home’s proximity
because of the home’s proximity to the major transportation artery, according sheriff’s Lt. Marco Garmo.
Nearby residences have been evacuated following the explosion and pending the FBI and sheriff’s investigation.

The explosives found at Jakubec’s home on Via Scott were Hexamethylene triperoxide diamine (HTMD), Pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN), and Erythritol tetranitrate (ETN).
All have been used by terrorists and suicide-bombers around the world. PETN was part of several recent bombing cases, including the 2001 shoe bomber incident, the 2009 Christmas Day bomb plot and October’s cargo plane bomb plot. HTMD also may have been used in the 2005 London bombings.
