At The Rhoades School, students develop these abilities through hands-on, inquiry-driven learning that builds creativity, resilience, adaptability, and confidence. As an Apple Distinguished School, Rhoades also gives students access to advanced technology (including 3D printers, robotics equipment, MIDI music labs, and digital media tools) which they use to explore ideas and build solutions that can better the world.
Where curiosity becomes scholarship
Curiosity is at the heart of the Rhoades experience. Students explore their interests, investigate meaningful questions, and pursue learning beyond the textbook. Teachers serve as mentors, challenging students to think deeply, make connections, and take ownership of their education. Rhoades students learn how to think, not what to think.
Rather than teaching subjects in isolation, Rhoades connects math, English, art, science, technology, and engineering through cross-curricular, project-based learning. Makerspaces and innovation hubs give students room to design, create, test, and refine their ideas.

Through this process, students discover that success rarely happens on the first try. They become comfortable taking risks, learning from mistakes, and pursuing stronger solutions—the same mindset that drives innovation across medicine, engineering, entrepreneurship, and scientific research.
Turning ideas into discovery
The impact of this approach is reflected in the accomplishments of Rhoades students. This year, nine middle school students advanced to the 75th Annual California Science & Engineering Fair, joining nearly 900 competitors from across the state. Together, they earned more medals and honorable mentions than any other middle school in San Diego County.
Eighth grader Sydney O. earned first place in Zoology for examining the effects of nutritional supplements on egg-yolk lutein content. Inspired by the chickens she raises at home, Sydney explored ways to enhance a nutrient known to support eye health.
Olympia S. and Rishabh B. earned second-place awards in Behavioral and Social Sciences and Cognitive Science, respectively, while Jonah F., Maya G., and Mei L. received honorable mentions.
Rhoades student Sethee A. also earned first place at the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair for studying invasive bird species. By working with community data sources and conducting authentic research, she demonstrated how curiosity and initiative can lead to meaningful discovery.
Leading in the real world
At Rhoades, problem-solving extends beyond the classroom. This year, seventh graders researched marine debris and plastic pollution before presenting their findings and recommendations to the Encinitas City Council. Through research, persuasive writing, public speaking, and civic engagement, they advocated for extending local plastic-bag restrictions and showed that young people can contribute to positive change.
The Rhoades Middle School Girl Rising chapter also organizes fundraising events to help girls in Guatemala, Bangladesh, and the Philippines gain access to education. From Open Mic Nights to Cultural Bazaars, students use creativity, leadership, and community engagement to make a global impact.
These experiences teach students that leadership is not simply about holding a title. It is about using knowledge, empathy, and initiative to make a difference.
