The Falcons leaned on the Hogs Friday night to bounce back from last week’s offensive struggles, beating Poway 22-7 and spoiling the Titans’ homecoming. Torrey Pines running back Jacob Kreiss finished with 120 yards from scrimmage, scoring on 3- and 6-yard touchdown runs.
Torrey Pines returned all five starting offensive linemen from last season: Barrett Eilerts, Corde Keeler, Jackson Leddo, Kash Kenny and Bryson Waterhouse. Eilerts, a 6-foot-4, 265-pound junior left tackle, described the unit as one built on “experience and grit.”
“Our offensive line has played with a lot of confidence, and our chemistry has continued to grow every week,” Eilerts told The Coast News.
Kreiss entered Friday with 448 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 68 carries. He credited the offensive line for his success.
“My success comes from them, and I wouldn’t have near the success I would want if it didn’t start with them,” Kreiss said. “I give them all the credit, and we work hard to come out and be prepared every week. Throughout the season we have gotten so much closer, and it makes us have more chemistry when reading blocks, calling pass pros and just being a team.”
Clark Drcar gave Torrey Pines an early lead with 33- and 27-yard field goals in the first quarter. In the second, senior quarterback Blake Miller connected with Logan Bonneau for a 40-yard completion on first-and-20 to set up Kreiss’ second touchdown.
Poway answered with a 62-yard touchdown pass from Trenton Schrecker to Trevor Murphy before halftime, but the Falcons held the Titans scoreless in the second half. Drcar added a 34-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
The win improved Torrey Pines to 5-2 following a 30-7 home loss to Carlsbad in its Avocado West League opener, when Miller threw two interceptions. The Falcons’ only other loss was a 21-14 defeat to Rancho Bernardo in September.
“Even after the tough loss to Rancho Bernardo, I thought we played good football and had a lot to build on,” Eilerts said. “The biggest thing is learning from those games and not letting losses define our season. We’re still hungry, we still believe in this team, and we have a lot of football left to play.”
