SAN DIEGO — Work to widen El Camino Real south of Via de la Valle near the Del Mar Polo Fields and replace the bridge over the San Dieguito River is expected to begin in December now that the city of San Diego has awarded a construction contract.
The California Coastal Commission approved the project more than two years ago.
The Los Angeles office of Skanska, a Sweden-based global construction company, announced earlier this month that it won the contract for the $57 million project.
In addition to replacing the 84-year-old bridge, the project will widen El Camino Real from two lanes to four for a half-mile south of the intersection with Via de la Valle, ending where the road currently widens to four lanes just south of the existing bridge.
Skanska also announced that it will build an equestrian path underneath the new bridge, connecting with the long-planned Coast to Crest Trail. Other improvements include separated bike lanes, new sidewalks, improved traffic signals and riverbank stabilization to improve flood prevention.
Work is set to begin in December, with completion planned for August 2030.
