Mission Hills extends win streak at Petco behind Litchfield

In Friday’s opening game of the 2026 John Baumgarten High School Baseball Series at Petco Park, Mission Hills head coach Griffin Teisher expected some early nerves from starting pitcher Noah Litchfield.

With a PA announcer, a big-league grounds crew and a field manicured like a rug, the stage could have rattled a high school senior still relatively new to pitching. Instead, Litchfield opened with a swinging strike against Escondido leadoff hitter Nate Manganiello and never really looked back.

He retired the first two hitters on a groundout to third and a popout to second before briefly losing the handle on a comebacker for an error. He quickly recovered, striking out Escondido cleanup hitter Augie Albert swinging to end the inning on 21 pitches — 17 for strikes.

Litchfield settled into command in the second, striking out the first batter he faced, inducing a foul out to the catcher, and finishing the frame with a called third strike — three up, three down on just nine pitches.

“He’s got a good pitch mix,” Teisher said. “It’s a low-80s fastball and a good slider. He’s still fresh and kind of new to pitching, but we saw the arm talent and put him on the mound. We’re learning as we go, and he’s been developing — he’s starting to get some college interest now, with a couple junior colleges on him. It’s been good to see that growth, and it’s really cool for a senior to get a shot to throw.”

Litchfield, a right-hander, allowed one hit and struck out four over five innings. The game ended after Mission Hills scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead to 11-0 and trigger the run rule.

The win — Mission Hills’ third over Escondido (4-17) in the past week — moved the Grizzlies to 13-8 overall, extending their winning streak to 10 after a 3-8 start and keeping them perfect at 8-0 in Palomar League play.

“We’re battle-tested,” Teisher said. “We played some of the best teams in the county early — Rancho Bernardo, Patrick Henry, San Marcos, Carlsbad — so we saw a lot of top Division I and Open Division programs. We learned from our mistakes, and our guys adapted and adjusted. We got healthier, had guys step into bigger roles, and a couple of transfers became eligible. All of that helped us really start rolling.”

Sophomore standout Micah Mecucci noted a team-wide shift.

“The team has a lot more energy,” Mecucci said after scoring two runs and patrolling center field. “We just really turned it up.”

Mecucci has been central to the turnaround. After missing part of the early season with a back strain, he has erupted for five home runs, three doubles and 12 RBIs in his last eight games.

“What he’s doing is pretty unbelievable,” Teisher said.

Mission Hills spread the offense throughout the lineup. Right fielder Oliver Mulford drove in two runs on a two-hit night, while first baseman Daxton Hyde also finished with two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Hyde, the team’s rotation anchor, leads the Grizzlies with a 3.20 ERA.

Left fielder Cody Reed added two hits and an RBI, and catcher Braden Kaylor scored twice.

“Oliver Mulford pitches on Mondays, and he’s been playing the outfield — a position he’d never played until this year,” Teisher said. “I told him I needed his bat in the lineup, and he adapted. He was a middle infielder who adjusted and made it work. He’s been pretty spectacular this year.”

“And Daxton Hyde has been the guy who’s been consistent for us. We know what we’re going to get from him. He has the physical talent, and he’s really started to put it all together.”

“We’re starting to really see the fruits of working hard,” noted Hyde. “Team focus is really good, and we just love the guys we play with.”

For Mecucci, the experience of playing at Petco Park was as meaningful as the result.

“They do this once every four years, and the fact that it landed on a year that we’re here is awesome,” he said. “Playing here is a dream a lot of people have, and it’s a lot cooler on the field.”

Teisher said that reaction is exactly the point of afternoons like this.

“It’s so cool for these guys to experience,” he said. “A lot of them idolize Padres players, so to get out here and have this experience is special. They can’t really control their excitement, so it’s about reeling them back into a baseball game. But it shows them where drive can take you.”
