Recognized during local ceremonies
Thirteen of 43 educators recently recognized as Teachers of the Year during ceremonies in San Diego hailed from North County schools. Pretty nifty record. Incorporation expenses
The Rancho Santa Fe Association may be prohibited from paying expenses for future incorporation efforts, such as studies and the like. Anti-incorporation members believe these costs should be borne by those favoring the issue. It was reported the Association spent in excess of $85,000 on costs related to incorporation.
Hefty right turn fine
In L.A., failure to stop totally when making a right turn where there is a stop sign could result in a $38l traffic fine if the violation is observed by a gendarme. Only a complete stop before proceeding is acceptable. Report is that cops are doing
big business enforcing the
reg, which was increased from $159.
Phony tax notice
UT columnist Diane Bell writes that some folks have been receiving a tax letter that looks official from the assessor’s office advising that homeowner’s property has been reassessed and an additional payment must be made to an L.A box number. Assessor’s office sez no such thing has occurred and says to ignore the pitch.
Zone text amendment
If the verbiage is new to you, it’s a different way of saying to change the rules and regs in zoning. Speakers at the recent Brown property discussion in the Flower Capital wondered about its meaning. Bottom line is the zone text amendment was shot down at the meeting. Andrew Plant, representing Spring Hill Development, the applicant for an assisted living complex, said after a parade of speakers had spoken against the change that Spring Hill would not pursue the issue. During the meeting, a speaker charged the mayor had received campaign contributions in the amount of $250 each from four Spring Hall Development representatives. Responding to the allegation, the mayor moved to deny the developer’s application and the motion carried.
Another lawsuit
San Diego Coastkeeper and Surfrider Foundation have filed a suit in Superior Court in an effort to further delay the already-approved desalination plant in C’bad. Processing sea water into potable water is considered to be one of the best solutions for addressing the drought condition in the Southland that continues to worsen every year. Desalinated water is accepted worldwide.
Hope for 760
The early efforts of Leucadia resident Scott Chatfield, who established an active Web site to retain area code 760 for North County, have caught the attention of Judge Maribeth Bushey who sez the matter needs additional study and will render a decision this month. The changeover was due to go into affect in November. Chatfield’s campaign also caused Camp Pendleton to become involved becuz it will be greatly affected.
C’bad electeds will decide
C’bad planning commissioners have nixed a proposal to establish an upscale auto mall adjacent to the Encina power plant after residents in that area voiced concern about traffic, noise and pollution. It now is up to the electeds to decide whether it’s a go. The commish split 4-3 on the application for a general plan amendment that is needed.
Cardiff specific plan
It’s almost an approved document, but Flower Capital electeds have decided to give Cardiffians another look-see of a specific plan before committing it to the EIR process. It started in 2001, when residents Teresa Barth and Barbara Cobb co-chaired the Community Consensus Conference. More than 100 Cardiffians met throughout the summer to formulate the plan. Unfortunately, a San Diego consulting firm was engaged by the city to add its expertise and the result was a document that had little resemblance to what was envisioned by the residents. The result was that the plan was in hiatus until last year, when a second group of residents met every Tuesday night for nine months to create essentially an update to what was originally proposed. There will be no further consultants to muck up the works. Residents as well as the electeds want to see action after seven years.
Will he remember?
In 1996, when the GOP convention was held in the Harbor City, Susan Golding was mayor and a rising star in Washington political ranks. Unfortunately, as it turned out, a coppla weeks before the big event Golding announced her support for Sen. John McCain. The lights went out on her star at that point.
Meeting Ernie Pyle
Max Hernandez, World War II combat vet who passed away Sept. 17, spent an evening with Ernie Pyle, the legendary journalist who devoted his writings to the foot soldiers on the front lines. Hernandez was in Anzio where he was a 4th Division armored tank driver. Pyle wrote in his Stars & Stripes newspaper column, “Tank men in our little snack party included Cpl. Max Hernandez from Delmar CA” He described himself as one of those guys “who wanted to see action and look at me now.” The others chimed in saying, “now he’s one of the guys who wants to see home.” Pyle’s writings were published in a book titled, “Brave Men.” Pyle was killed by a sniper on Ieshima Island near Okinawa where he was writing about what else? Brave men.
