CAMP PENDLETON — Rock ‘n’ roll enthusiasts rocked the shores of San Onofre Beach during Camp Pendleton’s first Endless Summer Night, Aug. 19.
More than 300 service members and their families gathered for an evening of food, concerts, games, a motocross stunt show and a special guest appearance from Bon Jovi’s lead guitarist, Richie Sambora.
Before one note was heard, Sambora, who was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, gave four lucky Marines a customized guitar designed by the guitarist himself to fold in half and carry in a special pack. The guitars are portable enough to be carried on a deployment.
“It’s amazing that he went through so much trouble to personally develop a guitar for us,” said Sgt. Brian Mullen, data network specialist, 9th Communication Battalion, and a winner of one the guitars. “There are a lot of people around the world who look up to us, but it means that much more when it comes from someone you’ve looked up to for years.”
Attendees also participated in activities that included a comedic hypnotist, surfing lessons, rock climbing, a concert by rock ‘n’ roll band, Freeze Frame, and an appearance by the San Diego Chargers’ cheerleading team.
“We appreciate all the hard work and effort everyone here has been putting in to make this happen,” said Sgt. Maj. Bradley Kasal, sergeant major, School of Infantry-West. “Events such as this are important to the Corps because it not only develops cohesion amongst the ranks, but also help build camaraderie with the diverse units on base.”
The next free MCCS family event scheduled to be held will be the 6th annual Lake O’Neil Fishing Derby, Sept. 20, from 7 to 10 a.m. Children ages 2 to 15 will compete during a 3-hour long shoreline fishing competition. Brand new fishing rods, reels, fishing tackle and tents will be awarded to the winners who catch the most fish. Registration will take place at the event.
