Escondido Democratic Club makes endorsements

ESCONDIDO – The Escondido Democratic Club (EDC) held a virtual meeting on Saturday to vote on endorsements for local races including the Escondido City Council District 2 seat, which was left vacant after the passing of John Masson back in March.

Shelley Spisak, vice president of communications at the EDC, told The Coast News that they are endorsing Democrat Vanessa Valenzuela for the District 2 seat.

Valenzuela ran against John Masson for the seat two years ago and more recently attempted to fill the vacancy after his passing, but the council deadlocked on an appointment in April and left the seat vacant.

The EDC also voted to endorse Don Greene for Escondido City Council District 3, which is currently represented by Councilwoman Olga Diaz, and Andres Yañez for the District 4 seat.

Andres Yañez, a 20-year-old candidate for District 4 and a student at California State University at San Marcos, told The Coast News that this endorsement means a lot to him and his campaign.

“All of the issues to me are extremely personal. I may be 20, but I’ve been in the community, I was born here and I see what’s happening, I see the problems that are occurring and I don’t see enough being done about them,” Yañez said.

He will be facing long-time conservative incumbent Mike Morasco in the upcoming election.

“The endorsement is exciting, I think my age is going to be on a lot of people’s minds, but I think it’s an advantage. I think it’s time to let younger people implement the policies that affect us directly,” Yañez said.

Other endorsements include Alan Geraci for San Marcos City Council District 3 and Rob Howard for Oceanside Mayor.

Below is the full list of endorsements by the EDC:

Palomar College Board District 2 – Nina Deerfield

Escondido Union School Board District 3 – Joe Muga

Escondido Union School Board District 1 – Doug Paulson

Escondido City Council District 2 – Vanessa Valenzuela

Escondido City Council District 4 – Andres Yañez

Palomar Health Board District 2 – Terry Corrales
