ENCINITAS — Encinitas author and vocational rehabilitation consultant Behnush Mortimer has published her first children’s book, “Little Brown Girl,” a story that explores themes of identity, inclusion and self-acceptance.
The book, published by Carlsbad-based Write Away Books and illustrated by Jennifer Garstang, follows a young girl who feels isolated at school due to her name, appearance, and cultural background. Over time, the character learns to embrace her differences and gain confidence in herself.
Mortimer, who is of Persian descent, said the story was inspired by her own experiences growing up and feeling like an outsider. She now works in Carlsbad as a vocational rehabilitation consultant and said she hopes the book will resonate with children facing similar challenges.
“Even when people make fun of you, their opinions don’t matter,” Mortimer said. “What is important is a belief in yourself.”
“Little Brown Girl” is available in paperback on Amazon and through the author’s website at rehabsource.org/browngirl.
