ENCINITAS — Two North County mayoral races remained exceptionally close in preliminary returns, with Bruce Ehlers holding a 27-vote lead in Encinitas and Sharon Jenkins ahead by 36 votes in San Marcos, according to the San Diego County Registrar of Voters’ 2:51 a.m. Nov. 4 update.
With ballots still being counted, neither contest was settled.
In Encinitas, Ehlers had 9,779 votes, or 50.07%, to Rimga Viskanta’s 9,752 votes, or 49.93%. In San Marcos, Jenkins had 10,781 votes, or 50.08%, to Mike Sannella’s 10,745 votes, or 49.92%. The San Marcos District 2 council race was even closer: Justin Matsushita led Lindsey Smith by eight votes, 3,137 to 3,129.
Other council contests also remained competitive. In Encinitas District 3, Arielle Golden led Ed Sprague by 73 votes, while Brad Lefkowits held a wider lead over Marco San Antonio in District 4. In Escondido District 2, Anthony DiMartino led incumbent Joe Garcia by 213 votes. Vista Councilmember Corinna Contreras led Frank Nunez by 29 votes in District 1.
Among local measures, Oceanside’s Measure S trailed by 382 votes, with 50.44% opposed and 49.56% in favor. The city’s Measure R had stronger support at 63.91%, while Solana Beach’s Measure C had 71.91% approval.
School bond results were mixed. Vista Unified’s Measure N exceeded the required 55% threshold with 56.34% support, while Fallbrook Union Elementary’s Measure K fell short at 53%. Countywide, Measures A and B each had just over 51% support.
Elsewhere in North County, Keith Blackburn held a substantial lead in the Carlsbad mayoral race, Dane White led Elias Velazquez in Escondido, and Joe Green led Kenneth Zuniga in Vista. San Marcos Mayor Rebecca Jones led Kyle Krahel with 60.74% in the county Board of Supervisors District 5 race. All results remained unofficial.
Results are preliminary as of Nov. 4 and reflect statewide totals for state offices and propositions, all counties within each congressional and legislative district, and San Diego County returns for local contests. The county’s latest update, at 2:51 a.m., reported 766,723 ballots counted and 37.7% turnout. Candidates are listed by votes received.
