Dispensary holds peanut butter drive to feed region’s children

REGION — A cannabis dispensary in Sorrento Valley is collecting jars of peanut butter to support a local meal program for children who depend on free school lunches when campuses are closed.

Torrey Holistics is asking customers, vendors and the entire community alike to donate one 16-ounce or less plastic jar of peanut butter to benefit Got Your Back San Diego, a local program that provides nutritious meals to children who typically rely on school meals during weekends and school breaks.

In exchange, customers will receive a pre-rolled joint as part of the drives signature “penny preroll” program.

Last year’s drive collected over 2,100 jars of peanut butter, which helped Got Your Back San Diego to provide an estimated 200 meals over a 10-month period.

“The support from Torrey Holistics and the community it rallies has been a lifeline for our organization,” said Sue McLeod, co-founder of Got Your Back San Diego. “This summer drive is more important than ever as we strive to meet the growing needs of children in San Diego County.”

The dispensary hopes to surpass last year’s numbers because of the meal program’s growing need for assistance.

According to Torrey Holistics, this drive is particularly crucial for Got Your Back San Diego as the organization faces unprecedented challenges, including recent changes that have left the organization completely dependent on donations from the community.

“Our partnership with Got Your Back San Diego has always been about making a real difference in our community,” said Doug Gans, co-owner of Torrey Holistics. “This summer, the need is more pressing than ever. We’re calling on our customers, vendors and the entire San Diego community to join us in this vital effort to combat childhood hunger.”

The drive kicked off on July 15 and will continue through Aug. 31 or while supplies last. Donations can be made at 10671 Roselle St., Ste. 100, San Diego.

The peanut butter drive comes as Torrey Holistics continues to expand across California, having recently opened its fourth location, Oxnard Holistics, in Oxnard Shores.

According to the company, each store is committed to providing high-quality cannabis products with a focus on sun-grown options from legacy farmers.

“As we grow, our commitment to community impact grows with us,” Gans said. “From San Diego to Oxnard, we’re dedicated to making a positive difference in the communities we serve.”
