Community Resource Center celebrates 45 years serving North County

Forty-five years ago, a small and passionate group of individuals came together with a vision to make our community a more compassionate and supportive place. What started as a grassroots effort has grown into the Community Resource Center (CRC), an organization that now reaches over 7,200 neighbors annually, with offices in Encinitas, San Marcos and Carlsbad.

CRC focuses on providing food assistance, housing solutions, and domestic violence prevention in North County. They partner with individuals to address both immediate needs and long-term goals, emphasizing dignity and empowerment.

John Van Cleef is the CEO. “I was born into social services, and my career journey has brought me to community-focused roles at The Salvation Army, the YMCA, Palomar Health and now my current work at the Community Resource Center (CRC),” he says.

“Our journey over the past 45 years is not just a story of growth—it’s a testament to the power of community. Neighbors helping neighbors. Supporters stepping up to share their time, resources, and compassion for others.”

Membership in the Encinitas Chamber highlights CRC’s role as a trusted community resource. “We are grateful for the partnership and trust of our community, which empowers us to provide essential services and support to neighbors in need.”

This year, CRC was honored to receive recognition as Nonprofit Partner of the Year by the Encinitas Chamber, and Large Nonprofit of the Year in the 2024 Nonprofit and Corporate Citizenship Awards from The San Diego Business Journal.  John was also honored to receive from SDBJ personal recognition as the Large Nonprofit Executive of the Year. “These awards are a testament to the collective impact of our incredible community and a reminder of what’s possible when we come together with compassion and a shared purpose.”

Looking ahead, CRC will continue addressing root causes of food and housing insecurity, expanding healing-centered services, and strengthening community resilience to create long-term stability for those in need. The organization invites local involvement.

“You can join CRC’s mission by donating, volunteering, or forming partnerships. Your involvement helps address food and housing insecurity and supports survivors of domestic violence, contributing to a stronger community.”

“Together, we can build a future where every neighbor has the resources they need to live with dignity and hope.”

Perfect day in Encinitas? “Connecting with our community, enjoying the coastal beauty, and reflecting on the impactful work we do to support our neighbors.”
