Cardiff Library celebrates expansion

CARDIFF-BY-THE-SEA — Cardiff residents joined County Supervisor Pam Slater-Price, Director of San Diego County Library Jose A. Aponte and friends of the library to celebrate the expansion of the Cardiff-by-the-Sea Branch Library, Aug. 25.
The recent expansion added 25 percent more usable space, including a state of the art Community Room and children’s area and a remodeled computer lab, lobby and book stacks. Outside, the library features an expanded deck with a sun-shaded Poet’s Patio and a drought-tolerant garden, created by Jeremy Spath, as a way to teach kids about water conservation and to learn about native California plants.
This project came about through the time and energies of many, many library advocates, Aponte said.
“People build libraries, libraries build communities,” he said. “This expanded library is a public sanctuary, a safe place for learning, culture, the exploration of that culture and supporting the individual and the community as a whole.”
Supervisor Slater-Price said that one of her dreams, as a supervisor, was to provide a permanent home for the Cardiff library. “If we provided a permanent home, it would never be lost; it would always be here.”
The expansion project began in September 2010, with the work being completed by Manuel Oncina Architects and Harborside Construction. The project was funded with $1,287,400, which was authorized by the County Board of Supervisors.
The Cardiff branch library is at 2081 Newcastle Ave.
