SAN MARCOS — Vallecitos Water District customers will receive some relief from the state’s water conservation targets, as the state lowered the district’s target from 24 percent to 16 percent, officials announced on March 25.
Districts across the region have been receiving conservation relief as a result of the Carlsbad Desalination Plant coming online. The desalination plant provides the region with a “drought proof” water source, thus reducing the need for imported water that is subject to the conservation mandates.
By lowering the water conservation target, customers can power wash buildings including mobile homes, district officials said.
“The District has been in a Level 2 Drought Alert condition since August of 2014,” said Board President Mike Sannella. “The efforts by our customers to conserve during the drought, combined with bringing desalination online, are making the difference and will help meet our water supply needs to support the highest quality of life and a strong local economy.”
Additionally, on March 24, the San Diego County Water Authority’s Board of Directors rescinded the Level 2 drought alert countywide, Drought Alert condition. The VWD Board of Directors will in turn review the District’s drought ordinances to see what modifications are appropriate, according to a news release.
