SAN DIEGO — San Diego State University officially joined the Pac-12 on Wednesday, becoming one of several new members in the reconfigured athletic conference.
The Aztecs join longtime Pac-12 members Oregon State and Washington State, along with newcomers Boise State, Colorado State, Gonzaga, Fresno State, Texas State and Utah State.
With eight football-playing, all-sports members, the Pac-12 meets NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision requirements. The conference has nine full members across its other sports, including men’s and women’s basketball.
“Today is a momentous day for San Diego State athletics, the institution, and the entirety of Aztec Nation,” SDSU Director of Athletics John David Wicker said. “Entry into the Pac-12 ushers in the next great era of Aztec Athletics. Our coaches, staff and student-athletes are excited for the competitive opportunities that await us as we look to win Pac-12 championships.”
San Diego State departs the Mountain West Conference after winning 106 league championships, including five titles during its final season: swimming and diving for a fifth consecutive year, women’s basketball regular season, women’s tennis regular season and tournament, and baseball.
It marked the fifth straight year the Aztecs captured at least five conference championships.
When the move was announced in 2024, SDSU President Adela de la Torre said the transition would strengthen the university both athletically and financially.
“The move to the Pac-12 opens the door to exciting partnerships and financial growth, all of which will contribute to the success of our student-athletes and the vitality of our university community,” de la Torre said.
The Aztecs begin conference competition this fall with women’s soccer hosting Boise State on Oct. 1. The football team opens Pac-12 play against Texas State at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 3 at Snapdragon Stadium. Men’s soccer hosts Cal Poly on Oct. 7, followed by women’s volleyball against Oregon State on Oct. 8.
