REGION — After hitting record high numbers of animals in its care, the San Diego Humane Society is hoping to clear out its crowded shelters by cutting all pet adoption fees in half for the next month.
The promotion is part of NBC Universal and Telemundo’s “Chear the Shelters” month, aimed at spreading awareness about the importance of adoption during a time when shelters across the nation are grappling with overcrowded facilities.
Adoption fees will be half-off until Sept. 10. On Sept. 7, the humane society will waive all adoption fees as part of “Clear the Shelters” day.
The promotion comes at a time when the San Diego Humane Society recently hit a new record with 852 dogs – 644 adult dogs and 188 puppies – in its care as of Aug. 8. In total, the humane society has 2,001 animals in its care with more than 800 of them are ready for new homes, including an abundance of puppies and kittens unlike previous years.
“You can be a hero for animals by being part of the solution,” said Gary Weitzman, president and CEO of San Diego Humane Society. “If you want to add a pet to your family, there is no better time than now to adopt because there is a perfect match for you just waiting for a second chance.”
Adopting a pet from San Diego Humane Society is not only a compassionate choice, according to the shelter, but also a cost-effective one.
Every adopted animal comes spayed/neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. Adopters also receive an adoption guarantee, a voucher to a free veterinary exam, 30 days of pet insurance at no obligation, training advice, pet supplies and educational information to ensure a smooth transition for pets into their new homes.
The San Diego Humane Society is open for walk-in adoptions Tuesday through at its Escondido, Oceanside, El Cajon and San Diego campuses. Adoptions take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.
