Pipe failure prompts emergency repairs in Del Mar Heights

DEL MAR HEIGHTS — City crews conducted emergency stormwater repairs today in Del Mar Heights to fix a storm drain system and stabilize a slope along Del Mar Heights Road between Crest Way and Durango Drive, with work expected to continue for months.

According to the city, a deteriorating metal pipe failed along the slope near the road, causing erosion and sidewalk damage. Repairs were being made ahead of the winter storm season, which weather experts said could bring heavy rain, strong winds, mountain snow and coastal flooding associated with an El Niño cycle.

City crews will work Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Traffic impacts on Del Mar Heights Road include temporary lane closures on both sides of the road. Drivers can expect delays in the area.

“Protecting public safety is our top priority, and this swift response ensures critical stormwater infrastructure is stabilized before further damage can occur,” said Stormwater Department Director Todd Snyder. “Emergencies like this highlight the importance of ongoing investment in aging infrastructure across the city.”

The San Diego Stormwater Department’s in-house pipe repair crew will stabilize and restore the failed slope, replace the failed pipe and drain structures, and repair the sidewalk and roadway, according to a city statement.

Work will continue over the next three months and is scheduled to be completed by late January 2027.
