Mental performance coaching: Training the mind for sport and life

Student-athletes spend countless hours training their bodies. They practice skills, condition for endurance, lift to build strength, and study game strategy. Yet many athletes still struggle during competition, less often because of physical ability and more often because of pressure, self-doubt, or difficulty responding to mistakes in the moment. One important part of performance is often left untrained: the mind.

Mental performance coaching focuses on developing the mental skills that influence how athletes perform, respond, and grow. Skills such as self-awareness, confidence, focus, emotional regulation, resilience, and preparation play a significant role in how athletes manage pressure, respond to setbacks, and perform consistently. Like physical skills, these mental skills are trainable.

When athletes struggle with inconsistency, frustration, or confidence, it is often less about talent and more about not having been taught how to manage thoughts, feelings, and actions in high-pressure situations. Mental performance coaching helps address this gap by helping athletes better understand what influences their performance and by teaching practical tools they can apply both in competition and in daily life.

Mental performance coaching is not clinical therapy, and it does not involve diagnosing or treating mental health conditions. Instead, it is educational and performance-focused, similar to working with a strength coach or skills trainer. Athletes learn how to prepare mentally, stay present, respond constructively to mistakes, and regulate their energy so they can perform closer to their potential.

Through skills-based learning sessions, athletes work through performance challenges and develop proactive tools that support resilience, confidence, and consistency over time. This work emphasizes awareness, responsibility, and intentional preparation rather leaving things to chance. It is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Athletes develop mental skills in ways that reflect their individual sport, personality, developmental stage, and performance demands.

For parents, today’s youth sports environment can feel more demanding than ever. Expectations are higher, schedules are full, and pressure can come from many directions. When athletes develop mental skills, they are often better equipped to handle adversity, communicate more effectively, and maintain perspective, contributing to a healthier and more balanced experience both in and beyond sports.

Raising Strength™ is a mental performance coaching practice based in Encinitas, founded by Dr. Alli Carpenter, serving student-athletes and performers across San Diego County. Through individual coaching, small-group programs, and educational workshops, Raising Strength helps athletes train their minds with the same purpose they bring to physical training.

Families interested in learning more often begin with a discovery conversation to explore whether mental performance coaching is a good fit for their athlete’s needs and goals.
