Letters: Hope and change for Encinitas

While the blue majority of California woke up in shock from the national results the morning after the election, the sunrise brought a wave of joy here in Encinitas.

In an unprecedented sweep, three opposition candidates – Councilmember Bruce Ehlers along with political newcomers Luke Shaffer and Jim O’Hara – all won their seats. For the first time in almost a decade, our city council won’t have a Democrat-dominant majority. This election is a turning point for our community.

The significance of this race isn’t just the clean sweep but also the fact that Bruce Ehlers for Mayor, Luke Shaffer for D1, and Jim O’Hara for D2 won running on an independent, No-Party Preference slate. They campaigned on real issues like infrastructure, safety, and curbing overdevelopment, not party ideologies. Despite facing well-funded opponents endorsed by the Democratic party, Bruce, Luke, and Jim had no party support and still came out on top.

Their campaigns were a breath of fresh air in the wake of 2022’s vitriolic elections. They ran clean campaigns, focused on meeting constituents, knowing the issues, and, most importantly, listening. I trust they’ll be fiscally responsible and resident-centric in their leadership, as their support base spans Democrats, Republicans, and NPP voters alike.

Congratulations to Bruce, Luke, and Jim! Encinitas is excited for a future shaped by leaders who will work to unite us rather than divide us.
