SAN MARCOS — The San Marcos Unified School District confirmed leadership changes at several schools ahead of the new academic year.
Nathan Baker, who has served as the principal of Mission Hills High School since 2022, has been named the new principal of Twin Oaks High School and the district’s Adult School program. He will replace former principal Garth Phillips.
School district representatives said the district periodically makes leadership transitions based on strengths and evolving needs at individual school sites.
“We have some exciting new programs and initiatives planned for Twin Oaks, and Nathan’s experience and leadership make him a strong fit to lead that work. We are excited to have him leading this next chapter for Twin Oaks and its students,” said SMUSD spokesperson Christine Lee. 
Gary Pope, who most recently served as principal at San Elijo Elementary School for five years, will take over Baker’s former position at Mission Hills. This isn’t Pope’s first experience with the Grizzlies; he started his career as a teacher and coach at Mission Hills around 20 years ago.
“His return to Mission Hills as principal is truly a full-circle moment. Gary brings significant leadership experience along with an understanding of the school and its community,” Lee said.
Lastly, San Elijo Elementary Assistant Principal Mara McLeod will take over as the school’s principal. She has served as assistant principal for six and a half years and previously worked as a teacher at the school.
“It is with great excitement and a deep sense of gratitude that I introduce myself as the new principal of San Elijo Elementary School for the 2026-2027 school year. SEES has been my home for many years, and I am honored to step into this role and continue serving a community that means so much to me,” McLeod said in a message to San Elijo Elementary families.
Nicole Imoto has been named the new assistant principal at San Elijo Hills.
