Indoor pickleball club to open in Carlsbad

CARLSBAD — A new indoor pickleball facility is set to open in Carlsbad later this summer as demand for the rapidly growing sport continues across North County.

The Picklr, a Utah-based indoor pickleball franchise founded in 2021, announced it plans to open a 36,300-square-foot club in late August at 5830 El Camino Real in the business-industrial Carlsbad Corporate Center, near Upper Deck trading card and collectibles.

The facility will feature 10 indoor courts, including one championship-sized court, along with a pro shop, private event space and instructional programs for players of all ages and skill levels.

According to the company, memberships will include unlimited open play, league competition, tournaments and access to Picklr locations nationwide.

The Carlsbad club is locally owned by Neil Capin and Chris Foote and is part of the company’s national expansion, which includes plans for more than 500 locations across the United States.

The opening comes as local governments and private operators continue expanding pickleball facilities to meet growing demand. As previously reported by The Coast News, the Carlsbad City Council approved plans in 2024 to build eight new outdoor pickleball courts at Calavera Hills Community Park and Stagecoach Community Park, adding to the city’s existing six outdoor courts at Poinsettia Community Park after residents raised concerns about overcrowded courts and long wait times.

In neighboring Encinitas, Bobby Riggs Racket and Paddle Club is also seeking city approval to formally convert seven tennis courts into 16 pickleball courts, part of a proposal that includes additional parking, sound barriers and other site improvements following months of disputes over noise and permitting.

A grand opening celebration for the new indoor facility is planned for late August.
