ENCINITAS — This year’s heritage tree lighting in downtown Encinitas will offer visitors a new holiday experience unlike any locals have seen in the city before.
The Encinitas Chamber of Commerce plans to host a holiday village and market on Dec. 4 at the west end of the Moonlight State Beach parking lot.
Carol Knight, the chamber’s chief executive, told The Coast News that 20 local vendors will sell food, flowers and other items for those attending the tree lighting.
“We’re really trying to create that great holiday experience by the coast,” Knight said. “The chamber is always looking for ways to support our local businesses … It occurred to me there’s not really a holiday market here in Encinitas.”
She said the chamber hopes to decorate the village for the holidays and possibly bring in carolers.
The market will complement the Encinitas Historical Society’s heritage tree lighting and the city’s annual parade the following day.
“It’s a great marriage and we’re all supporting each other,” Knight said.
The chamber entered into a memorandum of understanding with the city, which the City Council approved unanimously Sept. 9. The agreement covers about $1,600 in event-related costs, largely for permits and oversight.
Knight said the agreement will also help promote the event through banners, fliers and online outreach.
“We work quite closely with the city and appreciate their support with the MOU,” she said.
Knight said the chamber is still seeking sponsors and has openings for vendors interested in the inaugural holiday village and market.
“And we really hope it becomes an annual Encinitas tradition,” she said.
