REGION — Four seats on the MiraCosta College board of trustees are up for election in November, and three are already filled by incumbents running unopposed.
MiraCosta’s seven-member board oversees the nearly 11,000 students enrolled in the college, which is headquartered in Oceanside and has additional campuses in Carlsbad and Encinitas. Board members are elected to four-year terms by trustee area.
Incumbents Jacqueline Simon and Frank Merchat, who represent Area 3 and 4, respectively, are running unopposed for re-election. Area 3 covers portions of Carlsbad and Encinitas, and Area 4 covers the eastern part of Carlsbad.
Trustee George McNeil, who represents Area 5, which covers southern Oceanside and northern Carlsbad, will not be running for re-election. Instead, two newcomers, former community college trustee Ann Crosbie and realtor Alexander Thomas Wells III, are competing for the spot on the board.
Incumbent Heather Conklin is also the only one running to represent Area 7, which covers central through northeastern Oceanside.
Conklin was appointed to Area 7 earlier this year after former Trustee Bill Fischer resigned for personal reasons. Once elected, Conklin will finish out the remaining two years of Fischer’s term, which was due to expire in 2026.
