Carlsbad hosting free composting workshop

CARLSBAD — The city of Carlsbad is hosting a free composting workshop for residents April 9 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch, 5704 Paseo Del Norte.

Composting is nature’s way of recycling and turns “organic waste,” including food scraps, leaves and grass trimmings, into a valuable organic fertilizer.

This workshop will demonstrate how to start and maintain a highly efficient backyard compost system, including what to feed a compost pile, appropriate bins, tips, troubleshooting and more.

The workshop is taught by staff from AgriService and will cover:

• What is composting and why it is so important

• What tools and materials you’ll need

• Which items are compostable and which are not

• Harvesting and using your compost

Space is limited and registration is required. To sign up beginning March 14, visit the city’s website at carlsbadca.gov. Proof of residency is required.

The composting workshop is part of the city’s Earth Month campaign, designed to encourage recycling and increase awareness of sustainable practices in Carlsbad.

The campaign was created to support California’s ambitious goal of 75 percent recycling, composting or source reduction of solid waste by 2020.

The Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery, known as CalRecycle, is leading the statewide efforts to decrease California’s reliance on landfills.
