CARLSBAD — Carlsbad City Council amended its municipal code to allow the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health to extend restaurant ratings to food trucks within the city at the Dec. 4 meeting.

“The grading system provides consumers with more information about the overall operating condition of mobile food vendors, similar to what you would see in a restaurant of an A, B, or C rating,” explained Michele Masterson, senior analyst with the city.
The city currently allows food trucks to operate in Carlsbad, as long as they have the appropriate permits from the county.
Separately, food carts, like the coffee cart in front of the Dove library, do obtain permits from the city.
In addition to the food truck amendment, Mayor Matt Hall also recommended Marty Montgomery to the Carlsbad Planning Commission.
The rest of the City Council supported Hall and unanimously appointed Montgomery.
Montgomery will take the place of Commissioner Julie Nygaard who was elected to the Tri-City Healthcare District board of directors.
Montgomery has served on the Planning Commission previously.
Hall stated that normally he would have nominated someone who was new to the planning commission, but in this case he felt an experienced member would assist with the number of detailed projects coming before the city.
“I thought it would be in the best interests of the community to have somebody who is up to speed, who could analyze those projects and give a fair assessment,” said Hall.
