Big Blue Swim School coming to Escondido

ESCONDIDO — Big Blue Swim School announced it will open a new Escondido location in May to host its swim lessons and programs.

The swim school was founded in 2009 by Chris DeJong, who competed on both the University of Michigan and United States national swim teams.

“The Escondido team brings a thoughtful, hands-on approach that aligns closely with how we believe Big Blue should operate,” DeJong said. “As parents themselves, they understand the importance of access, consistency, and creating an environment where kids feel supported and confident in the water.”

The new location will share a parking lot with The Home Depot along West Valley Parkway near the interchange of Interstate 15 and state Route 78.

Big Blue has more than 50 swim schools in 17 states, according to a press release, including one in Point Loma and five total in Southern California.

Big Blue Swim School offers lessons across different levels — Baby Blue, Bright Blue, Bold Blue and Big Blue — with class ratios and instruction tailored to age and skill level.

The lessons are designed to be family-friendly, with the release stating, “Big Blue Swim School was founded with the belief that learning to swim is about more than just safety, it’s about building confidence, bravery and lifelong skills.”

“Families in Escondido deserve a swim school that feels welcoming, consistent, and truly focused on each child,” said Victoria Pitts, manager of Big Blue Swim School in Escondido. “Big Blue’s individualized approach and progress-tracking technology give parents real visibility into how their swimmer is growing, and we’re looking forward to becoming a trusted resource for families in the community.”
