OCEANSIDE — Amateur and professional astronomers are invited to the Southern California Astronomy Exposition from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 14 at Oceanside Photo and Telescope, 918 Mission Ave.The free, family-friendly event welcomes special guests Geoff Notkin of Science Channel’s “Meteorite Men,” who will be on hand throughout the day showing off actual meteorite samples before presenting a limited-seating talk at 4 p.m.
Joining the guest lineup is award-winning astro-photographer Stephen Ramsden, who is the director of the Charlie Bates Solar Astronomy Project, a non-profit organization that teaches children about the wonders of the sun through lectures and telescope observations. During the expo, Ramsden and other representatives will train their filtered telescopes on the sun (clear skies permitting) to give visitors dramatic peeks at our nearest star.
In addition, this year’s expo features prizes, including telescopes, cameras, filter wheels, tripods, eyepieces and more, providing astronomers of all levels a chance to take home equipment to explore and capture celestial images. Tickets are free for the giveaways, which will be held at noon and 3 p.m. for adults and 5:30 p.m. for children. A raffle will follow at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $2 each, with all proceeds benefiting the Charlie Bates Solar Astronomy Project.
