A grant-writing workshop for nonprofits offered.

ENCINITAS — Applications are available as of April 4 for the city of Encinitas and Mizel Family Foundation Community Grant Program.
Grants for up to $5,000 each are given to nonprofit, arts and community organizations, to carry out projects and programs that directly benefit the residents of Encinitas. School and library programs, art exhibits, concerts, books for children, yoga for seniors and holiday baskets for families in need, are but a few of the many community projects that have been funded by the program.
In 2010 and 2011, $108,000 in funding was allocated through the grant program; the amount for 2011/ 2012 is still being determined. The Mizel Family Foundation has made a dollar-for-dollar matching donation, doubling the city funding, for the last four years.
The grant program provides funding in two categories: Civic (social, recreation, education, health and the environment) and Arts (visual, performing and literary arts, and arts education). Applications are available for download on the city website at cityofencinitas.org. Look for the link on the home page, left column, under City News and Events. The application document is a fillable Microsoft Word form that can be saved on the applicant’s computer. Hard copies of the application are available in the lobby of Encinitas City Hall, 505 S. Vulcan Ave. The deadline to submit applications is 3 p.m. May 20.

“Successful grant seeking is a combination of doing research to find the appropriate potential funding source, following the grant guidelines and preparing a well-written proposal. This workshop will cover the essentials of writing a grant proposal,” said Sharon Omahen, executive director of the Coastal Community Foundation. Hand to Hand, a women’s fund at CCF, and the city are sponsoring the workshops.
Applications will be reviewed by an Evaluation Panel comprised of members from five city commissions. Recommendations for funding will be forwarded to City Council; grant allocations will be determined at the council meeting July 13.
