SOLANA BEACH — Saying he was “honored and humbled” to be part of this year’s Memorial Day ceremony at La Colonia Community Park, Mayor Mike Nichols dedicated the event to remembering the “true heroes of our nation and community.”
Nichols recognized the sacrifice and commitment of all military men and women and offered special thoughts and prayers for those currently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“We are indebted to them forever,” said Nichols, whose grandfather served as a Marine during World War II.
The annual event, co-hosted by the city and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5431, was attended by VFW members representing all branches of the military, current and former City Council members, the Camp Pendleton Young Marines, Cub Scout Pack 782, Solana Beach firefighters, area residents and state Assemblyman Martin Garrick, whose 74th District includes Solana Beach. The Santa Fe Christian High School band performed patriotic songs.
Garrick, who said one reason he serves in the Assembly is his “patriotic passion for our freedom,” comes from a family with a history of service to the country. His grandfather flew planes in both World Wars and an uncle served in World War II. Garrick’s father joined the Navy 65 days after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and his mother was a member of the Women’s Army Corps.
The ceremony concluded with the release of several white doves, the symbol of peace.
