San Marcos Council candidate Dean Nelson

SAN MARCOS — There are two seats on the City Council to be filled at the ballot box this November. The two incumbents, Hal Martin and Rebecca Jones, made it clear early on that they intended to run again. It looked as if they just might retain their offices unopposed until a third contender, Dean Nelson, threw his hat into the ring just hours before the filing deadline Aug. 7.
“I think the citizens of San Marcos deserve a choice,” Nelson said. “That’s one of the reasons I signed up.”
This will be Nelson’s second bid for a council seat. A member and former chairman of the planning commission, Nelson manages the Ace Hardware on Grand Avenue, serves on the board of the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce and is a strong advocate for local business. As a planning commissioner, Nelson voted against allowing a Wal-Mart to build a second store in San Marcos.
Nelson also has a passion for youth activities and he serves as a coach and sponsor for San Marcos Youth Baseball. He supports transparency in government and favors a more comprehensive and user-friendly city Web site. Nelson also said he would like to see more applicants for the city’s commissions.
“I think we’re doing a lot of good things on the council, (but) I’d like to see more citizen activism,” Nelson said.
