Public transportation free after 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve

REGION — Whether headed to one of the many parties downtown, or just making your way home from a quiet evening with friends, officials today encouraged San Diegans to take advantage of free public transportation on New Year’s Eve.

San Diego Metropolitan Transit System and the North County Transit District will provide extra late-night service on New Year’s Eve, with all rides free after 6 p.m.

“We strongly encourage everyone to take advantage of the convenience of transit, available at no cost and with extra service on New Year’s Eve,” said Steve Goble, MTS Board of Directors vice chair, in a statement. “We want to ensure all San Diegans have the opportunity to ring in the New Year safely, and we’re providing options that allow everyone to take precautions while enjoying the end-of-year festivities.”

Most trolley and train lines will operate until after 2 a.m. with the extended schedule. A detailed schedule for the agencies can be found at www.sdmts.com/rider-info/events/new-years-eve and gonctd.com/NewYearsEve/.

According to the agencies, extended late-night service will run from Downtown San Diego on the MTS Trolley and NCTD COASTER. An additional extended service will run between Escondido and Oceanside on the SPRINTER, with free rides on NCTD+ in San Marcos from 6 to 9 p.m. with promo code NYEFREE.

“NCTD is adding extra late-night service to provide more transportation options for you to ring in the New Year,” said Jewel Edson, NCTD Board of Directors chair. “Whether you’re heading out to dinner, to a
party, or to watch some fireworks, let NCTD be your driver. We’ll get you to and from your destination both safely and for free.”

During the day Tuesday, the agencies will run normal weekday service.

On New Year’s Day, transit riders should prepare for a Sunday service schedule on all lines. Regular service will resume Thursday.
