Operation Christmas Child launches 2009 campaign

CARLSBAD — Jordanian Huda El-batjani, who learned the gift of giving as a 1998 shoe-box recipient, will be a guest speaker at this year’s Operation Christmas Child dinner.
San Diego County volunteers will host a dinner and kick-off event from 4:45 to 7 p.m. Sept. 26 at Coastline Community Church, 2215 Calle Barcelona.
In 1993, a project of international relief and Christian evangelism called Samaritan’s Purse, headed by Franklin Graham, kicked-off Operation Christmas Child in the United States with just 28,000 shoe box gifts. Since then, the project has collected more than 69 million shoe box gifts and hand-delivered them to needy children in more than 130 countries.
The goal is to fill thousands of shoe boxes with toys, school supplies and necessity items again this year. The shoe boxes are then hand-delivered to hurting children around the world using whatever means necessary — sea containers, trucks, trains, airplanes, helicopters, boats, camels, even dog sleds. The volunteers hope to provide for children in more than 100 countries who suffer from natural disaster, war, terrorism, disease, poverty and famine.
