Online high school available for adults

CARLSBAD — The city library is offering scholarships to adults to earn an accredited high school diploma and career certificate online through Career Online High School.

The scholarships are offered by the Carlsbad City Library through the Carlsbad Library & Arts Foundation’s Benson Family Trust, in partnership with the California State Library and Gale, part of Cengage Learning.

The program provides a limited number of scholarships to qualified applicants who are looking to expand their career opportunities, prepare for workforce entry and continue their education.

In addition to a high school diploma, students may earn a certificate in numerous areas.

Educational opportunities include childcare and education; certified protection officer; office management; certified transportation services (commercial driver); homeland security; general career preparation; retail customer service; and food service and customer service skills.

Applicants must be at least 19 years of age, have completed eighth grade and have a Carlsbad City Library card in good standing.

Applicants who successfully complete an online self-assessment and prerequisite course, followed by an in-person interview, will be considered for enrollment.

Once enrolled in the program, Career Online High School pairs each student with an online academic coach, who provides the student with an individual career path, offers ongoing guidance, evaluates performance and connects the student with the resources needed to master the courses. Students have up to 18 months to complete the program.

Of 18 total scholarships offered, 16 are still available. For more information, visit carlsbadlibrary.org.
