OCEANSIDE — Fire engulfed a San Luis Rey Mobile Home Park residence at 5:28 a.m. May 7.
Within five minutes of the initial emergency call Oceanside ambulance firefighter/paramedics and police officers were on the scene to evacuate homes near the burning residence on Hummingbird Lane.
“Our first priority is to clear people,” Battalion Chief Terry Collis said.
The home was fully engulfed and had started to collapse when fire engines arrived. Once flames were put out and firefighters could enter one victim was found deceased in the burned mobile home.
Twenty-four firefighters responded to the incident and had it under control within 13 minutes.
Fire crews worked to put out the fire and protect nearby homes threatened by the blaze. One nearby home became involved in the fire. Flames scorched its patio and several vehicles parked nearby. The cost of damages is estimated to be $150,000.
“We got there and were able to get water on the fire quickly,” Collis said. “A few more minutes and other trailers would be burning as well.”
Collis credits the crews’ quick response time and good water pressure for extinguishing the fire before it spread to other homes. He added that not all mobile home parks have good water pressure.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
