Obituary – George S. Mitchell

In loving memory of George S. Mitchell

September 22, 1947 – March 5, 2025

George S. Mitchell, 77, of Carlsbad, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2025 after a battle with lung cancer. Born in Los Angeles to Byron and Virginia Mitchell, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and brother.

George was a proud member of the Cement Mason’s Union Local 500 for over 50 years.

He would point out every bridge he worked on from here to Las Vegas. His favorite I think was the Lilac bridge on I-15 on the way to Temecula.

He poured not only concrete but his heart and soul into every bridge he worked on.

He retired in 2007 and enjoyed every minute of his retirement.

George loved every sport there is: Football, Baseball, Basketball, Hockey, Nascar and he would watch Golf Tournaments for hours upon hours. He was passionate about all of them and knew facts and stats about every single sport.

We met one of our best couple friends from Boston on a cruise to the Panama Canal because of a Charger/New England football game many years ago and are friends to this day because of him and his love of football.

He was a Charger fan but was also a huge Rams fan.

Traveling was something we were so fortunate to do and he loved so much. The laughs with friends from Costa Rica to almost every island in the Caribbean to Alaska, New England and Mexico. He loved every single minute.

There are so many stories about George and they all reflect the man he was. Kind, generous, thoughtful, passionate, loving, caring, sensitive and strong.

If you knew George you most likely received a text from him, not just one but many.

He was texting his family and friends up until days before he passed, keeping them informed of his health.

He was amazing. Everyone who knew George loved George.

He loved music, all music, even country (some country, ok new country) and he shared that passion with everyone, but there was one most important person he shared music with, Claudine, his daughter-in-law.

She said that he was her music “soulmate.”

He absolutely loved his 3 grandchildren, Ethan, Grayson and beautiful Isabella.

And there are no words to describe how he felt about his only son, Todd.

He loved my 2 sons Jason and Ryan and 2 grandsons, Noah and Nolan as if they were his own.

He was so giving to them all. And they loved him. My family adored him.

He was always there for everyone and anyone, no matter what.

He had two charities that he gave to every year: Boystown and the USO. He felt very strongly about those 2 charities.

He was a very special person and I will miss him beyond belief but he is no longer suffering and that makes his passing almost bearable.

There will be a “Celebration of Life” on Sunday, March 23 from 1-4pm at the Rancho Carlsbad Clubhouse, 5200 El Camino Real, Carlsbad.
