LA JOLLA — Phil Mickelson and three other top players have committed to compete in the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open set for Jan. 28 through Jan. 31 at Torrey Pines Golf Course.
Mickelson, a three-time Masters champion (2004, 2006, 2010) who also won the PGA Championship in 2005 and The Open in 2013, will make his 28th appearance in the Farmers Insurance Open.
The additional top golfers include Jon Rahm – World No. 2 and 2017 Farmers Insurance Open champion, Brooks Koepka, World No. 12 and four-time major championship winner and Marc Leishman, World No. 28 and 2020 Famers Insurance Open champion.
Rahm, Koepka and Leishman join a field that currently includes 15 of the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Rankings and 15 players among the top 30 in the 2020-21 FedExCup points standings. There are also three past Farmers Insurance Open winners committed, as well as five players who have accounted for nine major championship victories.
San Diego golfers committed to the Farmers Insurance Open include Rickie Fowler, Charley Hoffman, Jamie Lovemark, Kyle Mendoza, Pat Perez, Xander Schauffele and J.J. Spaun.
The field is not final until the commitment deadline on Friday, Jan. 22 shortly after the conclusion of play in that week’s tournament.
Rahm owns five career PGA Tour victories, having won at least once every season since his first full year on tour in 2016-17. Following his 2017 Farmers Insurance Open triumph, the Spaniard won twice on the European Tour that year and now owns six international victories.
Rahm’s 2019-20 season saw him secure eight top-10 finishes in 15 PGA TOUR starts, including victories at the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide and the BMW Championship. In four starts this season, he has finished T2 at the ZOZO Championship and T7 at The Masters. Rahm, a former World No. 1, has also enjoyed astounding success in the Farmers Insurance Open, where he has finished T5 or better in three of his four appearances.
Koepka’s seven PGA TOUR victories include four major championships – the U.S. Open in 2017 and ’18 and the PGA Championship in 2018 and ’19 – and he also owns top-5 finishes at The Masters and The Open. He was No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking for 38 consecutive weeks in 2019 and ’20, and has retained the top spot a total of 47 weeks in his career.
Koepka, 30, will play in the Farmers Insurance Open for just the third time, coming off a fall in which he was T7 at The Masters and T5 at the Vivint Houston Open.
Leishman became the fourth consecutive international winner of the Farmers Insurance Open last January when he secured a one-stroke victory over Rahm. The 37-year-old Australian owns five career PGA TOUR victories and has played in the last four Presidents Cups.
In addition to his win at Torrey Pines, last season he was second at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard and third at the Safeway Open.
