ESCONDIDO — One man was killed and a woman severely injured when two pickup trucks hit each other in a collision on Interstate 15 near Escondido on May 21.
The Chevrolet Silverado and Ford F-150 collided at about 6:30 a.m. on the northbound side of the freeway, just south of Deer Springs Road in the unincorporated Jesmond Dene area, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash caused the Chevrolet to overturn and roll side-over-side “numerous” times before coming to rest on its wheels on the right-hand shoulder of the roadway, CHP public-affairs Officer Hunter Gerber said. The Ford, meanwhile, spun out and veered into a center-divider area.
The driver of the Silverado, a 19-year-old Murrieta man, died at the scene of the crash. His name was withheld pending family notification.
Paramedics took a woman, also 19, who had been riding in the Chevrolet to a hospital for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries, Gerber said.
The driver of the Ford, a 24-year-old Descanso man, and a passenger in his vehicle suffered no injuries in the crash, according to the Highway Patrol.
The cause of the collision was under investigation, though intoxication did not appear to have played a role in it, Gerber said.
