Coast Guard detains boatful of migrants near Point Loma

SAN DIEGO — The U.S. Coast Guard intercepted a boatful of suspected undocumented immigrants off the coast of San Diego over the weekend, the maritime agency reported Monday.

The crew of the cutter Robert Ward halted the northward-traveling 20-foot vessel roughly eight miles south of Point Loma at about 9 a.m. on June 8, according to USCG public affairs.

All seven occupants of the boat claimed Mexican nationality, the Coast Guard reported.

The detainees were transferred into the custody of the U.S. Border Patrol at Ballast Point, located on San Diego Harbor.

The previous week, on June 1, the Coast Guard intercepted a suspicious closed-cabin vessel carrying 12 suspected migrants approximately 10 miles west of Point Loma. All individuals claimed Mexican nationality and were transferred to the custody of Border Patrol.
