Carlsbad City Council delays gun sale decision

CARLSBAD — At the start of the Oct. 2 Carlsbad City Council Meeting, Mayor Matt Hall announced that the Gunther Gifts agenda item, a continuance from its regular meeting on Aug. 28, would be postponed.

The debate of gun sales has been rescheduled for Oct. 23.

Gunther Gifts Inc., a personalized gifts and specialty knives e-commerce store on Loker Avenue, in a Planned Industrial Zone of Carlsbad, is requesting a Conditional Use Permit. The planning commission denied the permit and the owners of Gunther Gifts are hoping the council will overturn it.

In existence since 1999, Gunther Gifts expanded its business in 2011 to transfer, sell and store firearms. Already granted a Federal Firearms License from the Department of Justice, the business needs the city to add the word “retail” to its current business license.

If granted the conditional use permit, the owners intend on converting 10 percent of its 965 square foot space into an “appointment only” retail space.
