Local Students score well at the Regional Science Olympiad

COAST CITIES — On Feb. 7, Francis Parker Middle and Upper Schools braved the rain to compete in the 2009 Regional Science Olympiad competition at Rancho Bernardo High School. Parker’s Upper School Team placed third in San Diego County, out of a field of 57 teams, and will advance to the State Competition on April 18, in Long Beach, with Upper School Science Teacher Rose Hanscom as coach.
The Parker Middle School team, comprised of 21 students, finished sixth in the county, out of 71 teams, earning a probably berth at the State Competition, with Middle School teacher and Parker alumna Christi Cole as coach.
The competition tests students’ skills in problem solving and teamwork in accomplishing tasks. Parker teams have consistently placed in the top 10 in the county, competing against teams from dozens of other area middle and high schools, nearly all of which are much larger than Parker.
